Social Stories can provide children the social information they may be lacking. We found a few good ones from the book ”Social Stories from the New Social Book” revised by Carol Gray. We hope these stories will be helpful for you and your family this summer.
The Fourth of July Fireworks
Every year I have a birthday. The country I live in has a birthday, too. It is on July 4th.
For my birthday I have cake and open presents. When my country has a birthday, I sometimes celebrate with fireworks. I watch fireworks outside or on television.
Sometimes fireworks make loud noises and have bright lights.
I will let an adult light the fireworks so that I will be safe.
The fireworks are safe. If I am frightened, I will hug my mom and dad. Hugging my mom or dad might help me feel safer.
Vacations
Sometimes I have time off from school. This is called a vacation.
Vacations are a time when schools are closed. Once in a while, my family may take a vacation while school is open.
It is okay to be home on a weekday when I have a vacation. Vacations are usually fun.
Sometimes vacations are one or two days. Sometimes vacations are for one or two weeks. Sometimes vacations are longer.
After the vacation, I can go back to school.
When I Swim
When I swim on hot days, the water will cool me off. It is important to always swim with my family or friends. Swimming with other people helps to keep everyone safe.
Swimming is a form of exercise that makes people stronger.
When I swim, I will wear my life jacket so that I am safe. I will always have an adult watch me when I swim.
