Join Bothell Pediatric and Hand Therapy (BPHT) in celebrating the 2011 Healthy Hands Week! Each year, BPHT celebrates this week by recognizing the contributions our Certified Hand Therapists (CHT) add to our rehabilitation practice. Sponsored by The American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT), Healthy Hands Week brings the benefits of the hand therapy profession to new audiences with the goal of increasing recognition of hand therapy and awareness of hand injury prevention. This year’s Healthy Hands Week theme spotlights individuals who rely upon the use and health of their hands for their livelihood and/or (serious) hobbies.
The importance of hand therapy in today’s healthcare environment cannot be overstated. A hand therapist works with patients who may have been affected by an accident or trauma, leaving them with wounds, scars, burns, injured tendons or nerves, fractures, or even amputation of the fingers, hands or arms. A hand therapist also treats patients who are disabled from the effects of repetitive motion disorders, such as tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome.
“Hand health and upper extremity injury prevention is crucial, especially among the many¬†professional artists, crafters, and technicians relying on their hands for their livelihoods,” said Jerry Coverdale, OTR, CHT, President of ASHT. “As hand therapists, we do more than treat injuries – we help people experiencing pain or impairment resume functional activities and enhance their daily lives.”
The therapists at BPHT recognize that hand and upper extremity use is part of everyday life; therefore, we want to ensure that patients receive the best care available! Outcomes of treatment include optimal well-being, return to work, enhanced function in activities of daily living, and increased enjoyment of recreational opportunities.
